Just want to bring another voice to this. I don't know how difficult it is to implement in Lua (though I would be surprised if it hasn't been done before), but what about gzipping it? If the format is space inefficient, then I would guess that it would lend itself to being compressed rather well. There could be a new file extension: e.g. .wez or .we.gz.
