In insert mode Ctrl+r "register number" does not do the paste

Describe the bug
In insert mode, if I use Ctrl+r "register number" it does not paste the text from the register. even if that value is present in the register and could see present in the register by using the register command.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. install vim
2. select a "yiw" to copy to register 0
3. go to insert mode
4. press ctrl+r 0

Expected behavior
it should paste the content from the register
