Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Mortal Shell
  • Steam AppID of the game: 1110910

System Information

I confirm:

  • that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

Game is crashing my system. Haven't found a specific way to reproduce it, but today it crashed 3 times playing this. I've been playing TESO and GTAV too (And a bunch of games lately) and no problems with any of those.

SInce I see dome amdgpu error messages on the system journal, I have reported it on the AMD DRM Gitlab

Even if it's showing as a amdgpu crash. I've been playing others games with 0 problems during these last months. That's why I'm opening this report here.

Hi, apparently the game has an issue with DX12 sun ray shaders (at least this is what is seems to be).
First the DX11 main menu screen:
ms_dx11
And then the same screen but with DX12 option:
ms_dx12
Albeit wrong graphics, the game seems to be rather stable in DX12 - seems like a potential shader translation issue at VKD3D or Nvidia driver level - let me know how I can help!

I've used proton experimental, on Ubuntu 20.04.3, Nvidia 3080 Ti, driver 495.46.
Hope this helps!

Ps. I now realize this may not be the Mortal Shell megathread - happy to open another issue if necessary.

Main menu renders normally for me with vkd3d-proton with mesa 23.3.1. I have noticed a different issue, however.

There's been a regression since 5.11 in how proton handles alt tabbing with this game, if the game is set to fullscreen, you need to alt tab twice to actually have another program on top. This isn't the case with proton 5.0, where a single alt tab is enough.
I tested 5.11, 6.3, 8.0.4, 8 RC 5, Experimental BE, and they all need to alt tab twice (when set to FS) in order for it to actually work.

This can be worked around by setting the game to a borderless window.

Tested with kwin xorg (plasma 5.27.10), I'll see if other compositors are affected later.

Edit: tested with gnome shell wayland and proton 8, it also needs 2 alt+tabs to focus another window, so this doesn't seem to be a compositor issue.
