Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Drake of the 99 Dragons
  • Steam AppID of the game: 755630

System Information

  • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB
  • Driver/LLVM version: NVIDIA 515.57
  • Kernel version: 5.18.10
  • Link to full system information report as Gist: specs.txt
  • Proton version: Experimental (2022/07/13)

I confirm:

  • that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

Many.

  • Out of the box, the game doesn't launch.
    • Solution: Has dependency on VisualC 6, needs vcrun6 verb applied to prefix.
  • With dependencies, game launcher shows testbars (shellmedia videos and game video files are in .mpg format, unsupported in current Proton) and crashes after the first video 'plays'.

    • Solution: Move or delete shellmedia\majesco.mpg. Upon launch, Drakeshell will display an error, but can be safely dismissed and the launcher accessible and functional. Note: the second video idol.mpg also will testbar, but can be dismissed and the game will launch with desired options.
  • With fixes applied above, the game boots and largely functions, but videos don't display (testbars) on Proton Experimental.
    • However, sound effects in-game are played too loud, as if the distance from sfx-emitters aren't accounted for. This becomes notable in the fifth, sixth, and eighth levels, where the sound effects become outright annoyingly loud and peaks when it isn't supposed to, as they are meant to fade out when the player moves far enough away--but doesn't seem to work this way in Proton/Wine.

Reproduction

  1. Launch the game. Follow symptoms breakdown listed above for further reproduction.

Notes

  • Tried with ProtonGE fork: on my system, attempts at playing .mpg video files causes running apps to freeze, requiring a force close. May need more examples from other users for this case.
  • Because the game doesn't seem to have traditional Steam DRM applied to it, I was able to run this title using Wine and a normal Wineprefix (WineGE 7-14): videos in the launcher don't show anything, but videos in-game do work. All other symptoms applies here, including Drakeshell crashes and sound.
