Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier
  • Steam AppID of the game: 789910

System Information

  • GPU: Steam Deck OLED - AMD AMD Radeon Graphics (vangogh, LLVM 15.0.7, DRM 3.54, 6.1.52-valve16-1-neptune-61)
  • Video driver version: 4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 23.1.3 (git-87ebaf765d)
  • Kernel version: 6.1.52-valve16-1-neptune-61
  • Link to full system information report as Gist:
  • Proton version: Launches to main menu with 7.0-6 but crashes when starting a game. Crashes after first logo on other proton versions.
  • Link to Gist: Gist

Proton Log File:

steam-789910.log

I confirm:

  • that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

The game crashes after the first logo on any version of proton besides 7.0-6. I've tried the latest Proton 9, experimental, hotfix, GE, etc. 7.0-6 makes it to the main menu but crashes after starting a new game.

Reproduction

Launch the game, and it will crash. The unreal engine crash menu will appear.

I wanted to provide an update, if this is helpful. I installed the game on my Windows desktop, and was surprised to see that I experienced the same Unreal Engine crash after the initial logo plays (this is the same thing I experience on Deck on proton versions other than 7.0-6). I right clicked the game's "Apes.exe" to select "Properties" and enabled Windows 8 compatibility mode. This fixed the crash.

I thought that maybe this same sort of fix would get the game working on Proton, however I wasn't able to figure it out. I used Protontricks to try and change the windows version to 8, but as far as I can tell it didn't help anything.

@sevansup We just shipped a Proton Experimental build that should include the fix for the regression, as well as allowing you to get past the main menu. If you continue to have issues, first delete your current game prefix and try again, sometimes issues will persist with a prefix from when an issue was happening. Let us know if you continue to experience problems! Thank you for the report.

@AJuujarvi You guys rock. This indeed fixed the crashing issue. Wow, way to go!!!

The game seems fully playable now, with only a couple smaller remaining issues that may still prevent it being verified as of now:

  • In the first scene of the “prologue” (in the cave), everything was black until the first choice prompt appeared. This only occurred once.
  • There is some odd behavior when pausing the game (the game speeds up after resuming and then hangs for a moment until the scene changes or a choice prompt pops up) - this didn’t happen on Windows. I suspect this is related to the above bullet point too.
  • The game defaults to stretching in 16:10 (I think it only supports 16x9) - I fixed it by forcing 1280x720 in the game’s Steam properties.

None of these are major issues—I’m just really happy the game is playable.
