So basically EP1 and EP2 are not working for me. I tried verifying the game files but it said everything was ok.
To test if it was the verification process not working I deleted various files, including hl2.exe.
When I hit verify again it says everything is ok again, but hl2.exe is still missing, which means verify game is doing nothing.

This means I can't repair my games, and they're like that currently:

Just in case: Did you try to first restart Steam before you try again to verify?

I've restarted Steam like three times and my PC one another. Still the same.

Does HL2 work properly? Can you post your steam account name (or email me) and a directory listing of the Half-Life 2 folder under /SteamApps/common , along with logs/content_log.txt after a validate.

HL2 works properly from what I've tested out.
But I can't find your email at www.valvesoftware.com/company/people.html to email what you asked for.

I've decided to put the content_log.txt file on pastebin: http://pastebin.com/i8TTVSsf
And the commons/half-Life 2 directory listing: http://pastebin.com/2MMHtw95
But I had previously deleted hl2.exe so I doubt all files are ok. In fact now the games don't start, they say hl2.exe is missing but download it.
Hopefully I made a backup of hl2.exe, but still the rest of the missing/corrupt files remain missing/corrupt, so episodes don't work.

Do a full half-life 2 reinstall and episode reinstall, it may normally work. because the converting stuff don't do his job correclty.

Too much size. It would take several days with my connection. I'd like to be able to use the verification so it only downloads what's missing or corrupt.

Make sure your Steam client is up to date, it looks like you are running an older version. If you validate the HL2 app it should fix it also.

I'm running the Steam Beta from May 10th 2013 (manual checking says I'm running the latest version) and I've tried validating Half-Life 2 many times too. I even tried validating Lost Coast too.
I deleted hl2.exe, validated EP2 (which btw validates also Half-Life 2, or at least it says so...), then EP1, and then Half-Life 2. hl2.exe was never re-downloaded and the three validations said every file was ok.
I'm pretty sure there're more files missing or corrupt since EP1 and EP2 don't work at all, but I can't say which files.

Can you re-post your content_log.txt after running steam, doing those 3 validates and then quitting Steam please.

I'm re-downloading Half-Life 2 right now so I won't be able to validate them for... a few hours. I'll do it a soon as I can.

Here's the new content_log: http://pastebin.com/13s5RDDC
Steps I followed.

  1. HL2 finished downloading (not episodes)
  2. Restarted Steam.
  3. Verified HL2
  4. Verified EP1
  5. Verified EP2
  6. Restarted Steam.
  7. Copied the content_log.

And the game still fails to run after your download correct?

Amazingly not. I swear I don't know what happened but now both EP2 and EP1 work (as far as I've tested).
I've done all these steps (except re-downloading HL2) several times each of them. So that still means the verification wasn't catching the problem.
But well, it works, so thanks Alfred, d00m3d and luckynator for your help.

If you make it happen again please don't re-download right away, we have a few more debug steps that would help us narrow down the underlying bug here.

Wow, I'm sorry. I tried deleting hl2.exe again but now it found it was missing and downloaded it, so I guess whatever was happening is gone now. I'll be sure to contact you if it happens again.

No worries, I understand the want to get in the game :) That message was mostly a breadcrumb in case someone else has the problem in the future :)
