What does "fc-match verdana" and "fc-match arial" say?
I think this might be because you those matches doesn't match .ttf fonts. I got the same problem when I tried to change the ingame font to a bitmap font (IE non-ttf font).

If this is the case then install "corefonts" (MS fonts) or "DejaVu fonts" they should be in you package manager.

in my case, the font is unreadable on Ubuntu RR

Please paste output of the fc-match commands here.

@DarkDefender Here is the output from the terminal

DejaVuSans.ttf: "DejaVu Sans" "Book"

@DarkDefender

Is that the output from verdana or arial?

Either way it should work. But you are not using the MS fonts.
If you were using the MS fonts it would say:
verdana.ttf: "Verdana" "Normal"
for verdana and:
arial.ttf: "Arial" "Normal"
for arial.

You can see which order the fonts are picked it by adding a "-s" flag. so for me the verdana output is:

fc-match verdana -s
verdana.ttf: "Verdana" "Normal"
DejaVuSans.ttf: "DejaVu Sans" "Book"
DejaVuSans-Bold.ttf: "DejaVu Sans" "Bold"
DejaVuSans-Oblique.ttf: "DejaVu Sans" "Oblique"

I am getting the same issue here. Here is screenshot of what I'm getting:

cs

In order to go around it, I have to go (blindly) through the interface to find the options for changing the resolution and this restarts the game and texture and text now don't disappear.

However, once the game is restarded, I can't join any server as the server lists are all empty (see #2895, or my comment on this issue). As I'm explaining in this comment, I can sort of go around the issue by joinging a server blindly with the interface that has text gone as the interface is still functional. However, I never know what game I'm joining. I normally order them by ping (blindly) and select the first one.

However, if I once hit the keys shift+tab, then the bug is triggered again and all textures and text disappear. When in game, it shows like this:

texture

So, in summary, I can still "play" if I'm cautious with the keys I'm hitting and if I don't care the server I'm joining and if I don't mind having to restart the game several times (changing the resolution), but that's quite annoying.

System info

  • OS: Archlinux
  • Archlinux' Steam package version: 1.0.0.61-4
  • Counter Strike version: I don't know...
  • Graphic card: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Broadway XT [Mobility Radeon HD 5870]

UPDATE (2020-05-25)

I can confirm that I can play without this issue on an intel integrated GPU based system. However, the restart issue (#2895) still occurs.
