I think this screenshot is wrong and the displayed behavior is intended. Items in pipes don't do any global pathfinding by design, so by the time they enter the fourth pipe, they don't know the fifth pipe is disabled.

^ the cyan pipe is not blocked from the point of view of the items.

Move the lever one block to the left and you will see the items turn.
