Localizing the written description/info, (now called context) would be a nice feature for those preferring to translate from French for example. That way the bigger (world) languages with lots of manpower could help out the small efforts.

This issue has been put aside. Currently, it is unclear whether it will be ever implemented as it seems to cover too narrow use case or doesn't seem to fit into Weblate. Please try to clarify the use case or consider proposing something more generic to make it useful to more users.

Hi,

There is yet several sources of infos to help translators:

  • using Weblate (the app itself ;-) )
  • reading string context
  • direct link to source code
  • asking questions in English on source string via comments or via GitHub
  • sharing thoughts with other translators in their native language via comment on the translated string.

I personally think it is enough to understand what's going on + there are often few (1 to 3) translators for 1 language ... so unfortunately the "manpower" is not there to fill any new "Localized description/info" on strings.

IMHO the main improvement would be to have a screen capture for most of the strings, its perfectly done for instance in this project (sorry translation is hosted in an other online tool): https://crowdin.com/translate/dropsync/45/enus-fr . It's really a great help but this feature is already available in Weblate ... but not often used by projects managers (it may take to much time to fill).

I prefer weblate dev team to work on other improvements than adding a localized string description.

For example LibreOffice, or the bigger projects on Hosted Weblate has a lot of translators. Some languages have 1-3 translators total, so in some cases it makes sense to make a special effort to reduce the generational loss from Englis→French→Small language for example.
