The projects listed here, except running the meetings and People of WordPress, are primarily the purview and responsibility of the Automattic-sponsored contributors. Indeed the Automattic-sponsored contributors have all of the final say in each of these projects. The consistency enabled by sponsored contribution for these projects is certainly valuable. But they are far from "meaningful" marketing work for contributors to do. The work volunteer contributors can do on the projects listed here is limited primarily to making suggested edits that can be accepted or rejected by Automattic-sponsored contributors and doesn't touch on mosts aspects of "marketing" by any standard definition. The Showcase handbook even has an AI-prompt for folks to use to "write" the Showcase entry. So, it's true these are the ongoing and Project Leadership-approved projects for the Marketing Team. But there is no way for non-Automattic-sponsored contributors to meaningfully contribute to them. And the lack of any meaningful way to contribute is the primary reason the Marketing Team has incredibly short and high turnover, extremely few long-time contributors, and almost no engagement after Contributor Days, despite initially high interest from folks who have extensive marketing experience. |

I think that you don’t get how this process worked. And that’s part of the problem 😀 (not your fault btw, but I do want to ask you to not jump to conclusions you can’t make.) yes I did get that through showing up and being there. Being at the meta table at many many WordCamps, starting with contributing back in 2006. I didn’t get to become the most well known SEO expert in all of WordPres simply by doing nothing. You’re severely underestimating how much work I’ve spent on this. There’s no easy to follow trail of that to follow for you, so I can’t (and won’t) blame you, but I mean when I say I think I’ve earned that with my WordPress.org work. Anyway; this isn’t about individual people to me. This is about thinking about what we think marketing should be. I’ll repeat here what I said on X: I think what I wrote down is exactly the problem of the marketing team. The lack of a plan; a vision. What’s the marketing equivalent of the Gutenberg project? I meant to challenge you to think about that, all together, and ask for feedback. I have tons of ideas. I’m happy to contribute them. But the way the marketing team works is not enticing me to join in. I’m not interested in tasks, or trello boards. I’m not even interested in writing blog posts. I’d welcome a good make discussion about what marketing strategies or even tactics WordPress.org should employ. That’s where this should all start, IMHO. Part of that discussion should be what we consider marketing. Soooo much of what we do is marketing, and the scope of the marketing team seems way too limited to me. |

@jennimckinnon i actually don’t think we disagree. I do think the team rep term is 1 year thing is nonsense. This shouldn’t rely on team reps. I was never a team rep for anything. The marketing team should begin with coming up with a good plan. If we can’t convince the community that that plan is good, maybe we should market better? I don’t mean to jest when I say that, I mean it. Start by marketing to the community. By telling them a story they want to rally for. Work from there. WordPress is absolutely amazing; we’re not even close to good enough at telling that story. What does fixing that look like? Also, what are the requirements to do good marketing? Part of the .org ecosystem is in a state that I’d describe as general disrepair. We need to fix that to be able to do a lot of good marketing. I think it’s not undoable to come up with a good, all encompassing marketing strategy. That’s going to be very close to a book in terms of what it should all cover from strategy to tactics, but that’s fine. The question I do have, is whether it’s possible to do that “by committee”, but we have to try, I think. |

In my comment I said "The consistency enabled by sponsored contribution for these projects is certainly valuable." Now, allow me to clarify: The issue I am bringing up here is NOT who approves a tweet or a blog post, or even who writes it. I understand and have long supported the need for trusted contributors to "hold the keys" to the accounts. I call them key-holders, and I think it is an important role and I'm not opposed to them being Automatticians. We all know the dangers of a rogue person with publishing access and that position provides oversight and accountability. Nor is the issue with needing Project Leadership to weigh in on important issues such as "What is WordPress". The problem is when solutions to those important issues and discussions, like "What should the messaging be on the WordPress.org home page?", are simply unimplementable. The "What is WordPress" conversation, first opened almost exactly a year ago, is a perfect example of meaningful work that is attempted to be done by the Marketing Team. I hope we can all agree that the primary call to action on the WordPress.org webpage is important, right? And that the dot-org homepage should at least be as clear as the dot-com homepage in explaining what WordPress actually IS? I think that would be relevant with regard to your (@jdevalk) recent post on the need for more and better marketing for WordPress. This issue had lots of discussion from both sponsored and non-sponsored Marketing Team contributors, the greater community (including someone who specifically named as having lots of trust, Jono Anderson, and even the Executive Director!! No one asked for homepage edit access or demanded to make the change themselves. The problem is that no one but the Automattic-sponsored contributors can move the issue forward past this discussion. Despite multiple tags, after her initial comment @josephahaden did not return with any further comments or to bless any of the suggestions or give anyone the go-ahead. And while the lead of the Automattic-sponsored Marketing Team did not provide any comments, there is a comment from the enigmatic and Automattic-sponsored design team, but no one who has the ability to implement it or even move it forward has touched it since May of 2023. Why? Who knows? Maybe they are busy. Maybe the idea of making a clearer WordPress.org homepage been invisibly nixed at some non-community, non-open level. Maybe having a clear definition of WordPress on the home page of WordPress.org isn't important to someone. But even that's not explained on the issue. It's just left to wither. And now this issue would soon be deemed inactive under a recent proposal from an Automattic-sponsored contributor. And we have the co-founder, who does have publishing access, joking on X about alternate marketing messages for the homepage such as "Proprietary is futile." LOL. TL:DR: It's not about having the publishing access. It's about allowing the open source community in the form of the Make WordPress Marketing Team to have any input at all into the actual MARKETING of WordPress the open source project. |

The issue isn't with a lack of good ideas that people are excited about. The issue is that project leadership up until this point hasn't been interested in an overall strategy or plan. Only the tasks outlined above are supported and only a8c-sponsored contributors are supported to do most of that work. As such, it creates responses from people such as you described on Twitter/X and reposted here. (Thank you for your feedback and for posting it!) It also doesn't make sense to me why we can't even start thinking of and/or planning an overall campaign for these tasks, which is exactly what any marketing person would do – have a plan instead of focusing on only smaller tasks. I understand project leadership wants to be able to ensure the WordPress branding stays wholeheartedly intact and so the result is a lot of gatekeeping as I described in my earlier reply. But, why then can't project leadership weigh in on ideas in the open on GH like everything else project-wide? The trust issue you mentioned would be immediately solved with little effort this way. Part of the issue which was discussed in the meeting I mentioned earlier is that there doesn't seem to be a strong consensus between the WordPress brand, tone, and voice across project leadership which creates a disconnect. It would be fabulous if we could all work on this in the open so meaningful marketing ideas can start to be planned and the Marketing Team can actually do what it's supposed to do. Up to this point, new ideas for larger marketing campaigns/projects haven't been supported, but there may be a meeting coming soon to discuss and hopefully resolve this in the open so I remain hopeful.
Existing team reps can choose to put their name in during the election voting period to continue for a consecutive year if they wish. It's not necessarily a stern timeline, but I agree that limiting a Marketing Team rep to one year isn't sufficient when marketing projects can take years to complete. |

Make core posts with plans get dozens of comments easily and sometimes hundreds. A marketing strategy discussion for WordPress should attract that too, and that’s what I’m looking for when I say “widely”. I don’t expect those comments to be all from marketers, nor do I want them to be. |

This is missing because we are not allowed to create that anchor point, that greater strategy. And that, again, is my original point. If there IS a "marketing strategy" for WordPress.org, it is contained to the Automattic-sponsored contributors and not shared with the Marketing Team or anyone else. I mean, we were told explicitly in October by @josephahaden that we can't even weigh in on the Annual Survey questions: "how can folks be more involved in the development of this? I’m not sure that there’s a clear path forward on that for me.” |

Right! This is precisely one of many issues that the Marketing Team has been facing for years that has been outlined in this discussion thus far. It would be amazing to get that kind of engagement on the Marketing Team, but it hasn't been feasible due to the factors described in this discussion. I just wanted to clarify what I meant, especially as it highlights the issues this team is facing given the definition you're looking for since it's definitely one of the points that Sé and I are trying to express here. |

I just wanted to chime in and say that it's very refreshing to have this discussion, and I'm thankful for all the participants here. It echoes a lot of what I heard as Table Lead during WC Asia -- confusion from new contributors because they weren't sure what exactly the Marketing team is doing, and confusion & frustration from older contributors -- even OGs like @jdevalk -- who are looking at it from the outside and to them it seems that nothing cohesive and strategic is getting done within the Marketing team. I had to admit at the tables and in adhoc conversations that we don't have an overall strategy; we're missing a lot of basic information that any Marketing department would tackle within the first quarter; a lot of the work that is getting done by Marketing is junior-level tasks that are sub-tactical (just simple execution) but not a lot of stuff that we can say is impactful and driving any notable change or leading in any direction. There is frustration from all sides, and all of that frustration seems to be directed as the existing or previous Reps, and I think that @sereedmedia and @jennimckinnon are providing necessary context here. My question then is: what's next? What actions do we take from here? All those execution-level tasks that @eidolonnight mentioned in the initiating post are fine, but it's missing the core of what we think the Marketing team needs to do and to be involved in: strategy. Can we come up with a strategy -- or, even earlier: can we come up with the list of essential questions and problem areas that will help us create a strategy for Q2/Q3/Q4 of this year? Or am I jumping the gun here? |

Lots of conversations regarding the team's vision and future, which are totally valid. I would love to hold space for those conversations. For the sake of this particular thread, I had hoped we could address only the work that is already in motion, most of it committed to before any sponsored contributors showed up. This existing work is generally lacking documentation, metrics, and regular contributions. I do not however presume this work to be "meaningless" and to do so would be disrespectful of the years of work this team has done. For a 20-year-old project, and nearly 8-year-old team, it seems prudent to address our past and present before building a new future. |

For the Showcase, the only permission-restricted pieces are exporting the CSV containing submissions and publishing the Showcase entry. Moderation, writing, and gathering images are all open to any contributors. In fact, we added a few during WordCamp Asia's Contributor Day. |

The process I'm talking about here isn't the workflow but the non-sponsored contributors doing junior-level tasks where there doesn't seem to be an overall marketing strategy for the Showcase. There's so much experienced talent that we have in the community that we haven't sufficiently reached out to in terms of inviting them to work on tasks, projects, and campaigns with an overall strategy that moves the needle forward for marketing WordPress. There's no greater vision that will lead to finding junior-level tasks meaningful, especially for experienced contributors based on the feedback the team has received. Meaningful work can seem meaningless sometimes when there's no greater vision or strategy, or if those two things are hidden. When a marketing team is only doing these kinds of tasks and there doesn't appear to be a strategy in place like any other company or open source project, it's easy to lose interest in the work that's available. People start seeing a marketing team that isn't functioning as a marketing team and they don't see value in contributing. |

Here is the vision for the Showcase:
If you, or anyone else, would like to draw up a complete marketing strategy for Showcase content, I think that's great. No one is blocking that from happening. We'll need one. That said, you will need to recruit people to your cause, work within the brand guidelines, and collaborate with other teams and projects. Some of that, I or another contributor can help with. Want to know how many visitors the Showcase gets each month? I can help. Want to know how much space we have on our social media calendar? I can help. Just ask questions. If that marketing strategy involves me doing work, I might tell you "no" and, if so, I'll probably also tell you why. Personally, I have been focused on the process by which we maintain the content on the Showcase because that has been an issue for the life of the Showcase. If there aren't fresh sites being added then soon there won't be anything to market and no need for a marketing strategy. |

Maybe we can clarify a few terms to help out here. I still see a lot of tactical things here, so maybe I can put forth my definition of Marketing-level strategy (assuming that Enterprise is an organizational direction for 2024):
So when asking for a strategy, I'd be happy to know those things. That gives us a lot of range of campaigns/initiatives/activities that we can undertake, at tactical levels, even junior-level tasks, but we'd understand what direction we're moving in and have concrete numbers we're pushing for. For example, for Showcase:
We can then maybe have something specific like: Increase visits to Showcase pages from X to Y by the end of Q2. Not great, not terrible, but it's something concrete. (Would be a great opportunity to build up subscribers for Enterprise level prospects only, who we can then nurture through a strong email marketing program -- mostly through educational material.) Do we have anything like that at the moment? |

Target audience is in the vision statement:
I understand that "the world" is quite broad. The implication is that this speaks to new-to-WordPress users, of all kinds, who need to see what can be done. Existing users and community members generally understand the power and flexibility of the platform. We can clarify that in the handbook if it can be said better than it is.
We don't really have the engine running yet, so it's difficult to establish a baseline here. Long-term, the North Star of all our efforts is "growth of the WordPress project" but for now I think views gives us a general idea for whether or not anyone is even seeing this content.
People don't seem too fond of timeframes, and it would honestly vary depending on contributions. If there is a healthy and sustainable group of contributors, then I think we can do a lot with this, a bit like the Photo Directory. If it's just me, or a few Automattic-sponsored contributors, doing the work, then Showcase is going to move much more slowly. |

You hit the nail on the head: this one is so broad & general that it's hard to do much of anything with it. When you're speaking to everyone, you're essentially speaking to no one.
Showcase has been live for a while now, and while it ain't much, it's something to work with. In the absence of measurable goals, it's difficult to have progress (how would you measure any progress?). I think we can apply a general +15% growth YoY as a goal and see how it goes. We'd then have more of an experimental mindset.
I think those are two separate issues. To say we have a goal to reach X by date Y doesn't mean that the entire thing is abandoned if it's not reached. Simply, it means that we have that time pressure so that we prioritize it. If we don't hit those measurable goals, we take whatever insights we got and apply them to create more fitting measurable goals for the next timeframe. I think I also wouldn't want to predict what people will or will not do. A bit of a cart/horse thing here, where we're saying it's hard for new contributors to join because we don't have strategies or measurable goals, but then we're also saying we shouldn't have strategies/measurable goals because we don't have new contributors. I don't think it'd hurt anyone to try. I think, at least, we should open the discussion around having one particular strategy/measurable goal that we can rally around. Whether it's increasing Showcase page sessions by 15% YoY, or any other thing we'd want to tackle. |

The Showcase speaks to everyone. Each individual entry will likely speak to a specific subset.
Right now, success would be a single new Showcase entry being approved, written, and images captured. |

This response is a non sequitur. @bernard0omnisend is discussing how we can measure the impact of publishing a Showcase entry. Your response simply defines success as completing the entry, and completely disregards the entire discussion about the desire for strategic goals for the Showcase. The futility of "do the task for the sake of the task" is exactly the issue here. |

That's all there is right now. That answers the questions regarding vision, audience, and metrics. The handbook also addresses why an individual may want to contribute, though I imagine there may be other reasons we're missing here:
@sereedmedia don't confuse not liking the answers with not having the answers. @bernard0omnisend just to cycle back to the other thread a bit, if you or anyone wanted to personally set a goal of growing views by 15%, that's cool. You may even gather a group of like-minded folks to do that. I would contribute to that plan, and help unlock or knock down as many doors as you need to do that. It's just not what I'm focused on right now because I (me, Nicholas) don't see that as the existential priority right now. |

I think perhaps the Marketing Team, and the community as a whole could benefit from some clarity on the scope of the Automattic-sponsored Marketing contributors role. According to your WP.org profile, "Automattic sponsors Nicholas Garofalo to contribute 40 hours per week to the Marketing Team." This is the same amount pledged for Reyes Martínez and Lauren Stein. Dan Soschin's 40 hours are split between Marketing, Training, and Core so let's say 10 of that goes to Marketing, and Brett McSherry is pledged for 5 hours per week. So roughly 135 hours PER WEEK of Automattic-sponsored time is pledged to the MakeWP Marketing Team. I simply do not think that the projects listed here account for that amount of time. Currently, Dan and Laura are busy with 6.5, so let's say they are fully consumed with that, so for Q1 we have about 85 hours a week of pledged sponsored contribution from Automattic to the Marketing Team.
The team reps are handling the team meetings, and (unsponsored contributors) @abhansnuk and @nalininsbs manage the People of WordPress posts. Reyes dutifully manages the Month in WordPress post. And Brett McSherry has handled most of the Amplification Requests in a timely manner in those 5 hours a week. But tin all honesty, I can't see how that adds up to 85 hours of work a week, let alone 135. So I'm wondering three things:

If you're talking about the Accessibility Checker, the Meta team said "no" to that because the Accessibility Checker creates non-standard WordPress tables. Also, there was a question of creating a relationship to proprietary software, and whether or not an internal tool or an external tool would be more in line with project neutrality and budget. I personally find that very different.
So if we were to put that in project form:
I don't think anyone expects documentation of every issue with Sprout or Zapier. I don't, that would certainly be tedious to document and to read (though perhaps people on the Marketing Team would be helpful in working on Zapier errors or debugging Sprout). But I don't see tickets for any of those projects, beyond the Contributor Day tickets for WC Asia.
What other repos? What other Slack instances? Note: I am not asking for access to these repos or instances. Nor am I asking for you to track your time. I just want to understand what work is being done to market WordPress.org, who is doing it, and where. Despite Project Leadership's affirmation that the work for WordPress.org should be done openly, it is completely unclear where the main work for marketing WordPress.org is happening, or indeed, what that work consists of.
I'm not a sponsored contributor and no company claims 5FTF investment by paying me full-time to contribute to the Marketing Team. Nor do I hold any positions of authority or keys for WordPress.org that require my participation. But just to answer your questions, I took a mental health break after my difficult term as team rep and specifically the chaos of the Bay Bridges lights tweet. I have only been observing in the Make Slack (Marketing and Meta predominantly) and not contributing directly (still doing my weekly WordPress podcast of course) until your recent proposals. But of course, I've definitely put in the time the past two weeks! :) And, out of order, but:
I don't have any idea, that's why I'm asking. But I admittedly find it hard to believe that a group of professional marketers working full time on the WordPress.org project would be working without some sort of marketing strategy. What it comes down to is this: If we're all on the same team (WordPress.org), working for the same goals (promote WordPress), why wouldn't all the work--and the strategy informing it--be shared openly? Even if it's only open for feedback. |

@sereedmedia you're not asking. You're making assumptions. At the core of this discussion is the idea that: That is simply not true. We're not hiding away all the best work. We're not trying to limit contributions. We're not dodging feedback. To the contrary, I started this discussion in an attempt to openly discuss existing projects and open them up to more contributions and get more feedback. As I stated above, this team started 8 years ago and Automattic-sponsored contributors have been here for a fraction of that. Many of these projects pre-date me joining the team. So if you have a problem with the work here, it's not my or any sponsored-contributor's fault. Notes from Marketing Slack Meeting – February 16th (2016)

I personally believe that auto-closing open GitHub issues would have the exact effect of limiting contributions and "dodging feedback". Whether or not that is the goal is up for interpretation, but it doesn't have to be the goal in order for it to have that effect.
Please allow me to clarify: I do not think that any of this is any individual Automattic-sponsored contributor's "fault". I think that every sponsored contributor, no matter who they work for, has an inherent bias toward their employer, and rightfully so. WordPress doesn't issue anyone a paycheck, the companies do. That is just part of the reality of sponsored contribution. I accept this, and I fault no one for loyalty to their employer, nor do I think people should be held individually accountable for the policies of their employer. What I do have a problem with is "marketing work" for WordPress.org that is being done, as you said, in "other repos" and "other Slack instances". This is not in line with the project's ethos, which was confirmed in December by Project Leadership. No one can say if the work being done elsewhere is "the best work" or the "actual" marketing work or if a strategy exists beyond the purview of the Make Marketing Team, because it is not being done openly or shared with the community (at least until after the fact). As you said, there is other work being done ... it's just being done "somewhere else". I also asked specifically "What other repos? What other Slack instances?". You did not answer that question.
To my mind, the distinction that is drawn in that excerpt is "focus on what resources we can provide to people to sell and market WordPress" as opposed to "teaching freelancers/agencies how to market their WordPress businesses." In my interpretation of this statement, the Marketing Team was not intended to promote external products or projects, but was intended to market WordPress. (And specifically defines the audience for that as the community.) I do not think the quote you provided says anything prescriptive about marketing strategy one way or another. However, building useful resources and materials to market WordPress requires a strategy outlining what resources and materials to build in order to achieve that goal. Since this was an idea that I shared, I can tell you that was not the goal and have said as much. If you choose to interpret things otherwise, that is your prerogative, though I'd caution against hostile attribution bias.
These things are not related. Repositories like the one for the Developer Blog are open and available to anyone. If I proofread a post there and ensure that it meets our brand writing guidelines, then I would consider that marketing work because it attracts new developers to our project. It is in a different repo and I think it even earned me a badge recently, but does that really matter? If I update my profile to list every team that I interact with in a marketing capacity, would that change anything? As for other Slack instances, I was referring to those for WordCamps. You generally need to be an organizer or working with one of the organizing teams to have access.
Your question was not specific. "Where is the repository for the Developer Blog?" would be a specific question. I do not owe you a list of every interaction I have within the project.

I really can't say this any more clearly. The work that can be open, for the benefits of collaboration, feedback, and review, is shared openly. As Josepha mentioned in Slack previously, not all work/privileges/access is available to everyone, and that is for a variety of reasons. Frankly, even for the work that is not open, like managing the social media calendar, we who have access/privilege try to be as transparent as possible. We share stats, stories, and answer most reasonable questions. At WordCamp US, I'm pretty sure I gave an entire table details of what it's like running around to organize things for the live streams. That particular work isn't in a repo because it's not standardized (yet), happens in realtime, and varies with each vendor. |

Some might call it "hostile attribution bias". Others might call it "experience". Who could say which it is? But while we're cautioning against things, I'd caution against gaslighting.
I didn't ask for, nor do I want, a list of every interaction you have within in the project. I want to know where the additional marketing work is happening for WordPress.org. The WP Briefing, for example, is a WordPress.org marketing project that happens regularly. But that isn't even mentioned to the Marketing Team. So is it a WordPress.org project? Or is it an Automattic project? Again, I'm not asking for access to this information or projects or any sort of publishing privileges. I'm just looking for y'all to be open and forthcoming. But as you have pointed out, you don't have to be. Good for you! Too bad we don't give out badges for gatekeeping. What is comes down to is that this team (project?) really isn't "open", despite all the rhetoric. Cool. So Automattic can continue to claim 135+ hours of 5FTF "Marketing Team" contribution, you can continue to "work openly", and the Marketing Team can continue to be an exercise in futility. Enjoy! I have a very simplified view of marketing this very useful piece of software. and its here: When I look at Dot Com messaging - its commercial, its strong, it tells the story from a user perspective the features overview is exactly what it should be. I see Enterprise in dot org, hidden behind the about link. I am no marketer for sure - which is a benefit, I see things the way customers do. I see dot org as a community led exercise that is a bit confusing, wants me to download a thing to make a website rather than encourages me to use that thing in partnership with the many thousands of companies that offer WordPress solutions. I look at Dot Com, I see a solution albeit the getting started CTA is terribly confusing once clicked and should appear later in my view. Showcase in dot org needs a new CTA - See what others are doing. Is there a definitive marketing message to general commercial users rather than a fixation around community? Does focusing on community 'feel' as though this phenomenal software solution is for me as a small, medium, large, enterprise business? Do we as WordPressers need to look at the messaging of others in the web building space? Like Wix, Shopify, Webflow, Duda who have very strong commercial messaging or is that type of messaging reserved for Dot Com? Anyway, I like WordPress and I will continue to use it as my go to web development platform. I'd just like to see more emphasis on attracting and explaining in a clear, concise manner to commercial users (on dot org), what the benefits are other than, you can write what you like, when you like. |

The Marketing Team GitHub has over 100 open issues, which makes it difficult for contributors to quickly identify issues that are most in need of help. Furthermore, the provenance, status, and endorsement of these issues are often unclear, leaving contributors uncertain about the impact of their work.
In an effort to help, I've compiled the following list. These ongoing projects, to my knowledge (which is limited), have or had the support/commitment of other teams, project leadership, and the Marketing Team. This list is by no means exhaustive, and we can see various new ideas shared in the Discussions area. These are simply projects that are already in motion.
Are any projects or links missing from this list? Are there links or documentation that are missing? Who are the regular contributors to these projects who could onboard new contributors?
