Could it be that the recent change made fall damage only depend on horizontal velocity? You can fall from insane heights (see replay) without getting any damage, effectively removing fall damage from the game.

It was like that in 2015-2016 too.

Recent change changed a vz to a vx so I doubt (because for vertical drops they're both 0).

I vaguely recall Spring having a different coordinate system than other modeling programs from years ago when I was making models... are we sure vz isn't the vertical axis?

I'm super certain spring is Y-up. Because Blender is Z-up and exports its Collada models as Z-up and there's been quite a lot of pain because of that during the 97.x era.
