  • Issue set target with some key modifier. Check what doesn't cause issues with custom formations and any other modkeys that may exist. I could have sworn we added singlefire to set target, but I cannot find any evidence of this.
  • Unit fires as far as they can at the ground towards the target. The target can be a ground position or a unit, I suppose.
  • Possibly add some behaviour that makes the unit ignore its set target command if a good target comes in range (much like the badger widget, and similar ideas). Hold fire would override this target switching.

The idea is to make fire-in-direction widgets obsolete in a way that doesn't require a state toggle, introduce somewhat suboptimal/annoying fire-and-forget default behaviour, or make too many decisions. I think the badger widget does all these things (if extended to a state toggle, which it would have to be).

The better idea would be to design-out simple decisionless firing at the ground, but this seems like significantly more work.

Check ward fire, especially ward fire shield, for a set gadget GG API for an existing way to give units a temporary target.
