We need to handle SSL in nginx. However, this might be problematic if we also want SSH on port 443. This might be solved by hand if we use a failover ip (do we have one?). Also, do we use only one certificate, or one certificate per subdomain?

For the SSH and HTTPS, we could use sslh.
It seems that sslh works with HTTP, SSL, SSH, OpenVPN, tinc and XMPP.
