VOTE MESSAGES BELOW FOR PROPOSALS

the current name of the project (oomox) was chosen to mimic name of Numix gtk theme, on which oomox gtk theme is based. However from that moment project has been grown to support more thing totally unrelated to Numix theme.
So my suggestion is to leave the current name (oomox) only for the gtk theme itself, but come up with some less misleading name for the project itself.

Hello @actionless ,

I don't care about the name but the regular user has migrate from GNOME Color Chooser to oomox and if you change the name from oomox to another name.

I'm not opposite to a change if you choose a really explicit name that describe what this software do.

Best regards and thank for your great job.

if it will be very generic name it could be something like Gtk Theme Generator or GNOME Theme Generator (and shortened gtg looks fine as for cli tools)

i'll leave the topic open for the couple of months

also i was thinking of options "Gtk Theme Designer" or "GNOME Theme Designer" (because that's actually more truish since app itself is not generating themes, but calling external theme generators, so it's in fact only implementing Edit and Preview components for the theme files), but gtd sounds less easy to remember

I personally like the name oomox (It's unique, and honestly I didn't notice it is a mimicked name of Numix until now XD), but I'd like to put out some ideas.

  • theme-gen
  • open-themer
  • open-theme-gen (and shortened otg)
  • themix

By the way, (I'm not sure but) if the project supports KDE, etc. in the future, including Gtk or GNOME in the name may get in the way.

Also I guess we have to take care that gtg is already used for Getting Things GNOME! (as an executable command & a package name).

themix

it's a very nice one

name oomox (It's unique..

it's quite a pointless star trek reference btw

also i was thinking of Libre Theme Designer a.k.a. ltd

gtkolor was the first thing that came to mind, but I agree that themix has a nice ring to it. I also had the idea of maxx after the TK/TJ Maxx clothing store chains - after all, this is about making your desktop look good. Could even call it gtk-maxx to make people aware that it's a gtk-related tool.

I'm a little tired so I'm not sure if this idea is laughable or what, but I found this as a pywal dependency and I'm pretty amazed by what it can do. Thanks for this tool, it's really special!

feature request

  1. Option to set transparency. I would request this implementation before you move to application-specific settings.
  2. import themes- it may be harder than it sounds.
  3. Highlight the item we are editing.
  4. I am sure you are well aware of radio button and checkboxes. I hope it is on the way too.

@somesh101 thanks, those are interesting ideas, please file separate tickets for them

(i think ticket already exist for (2))

I personally would like the name oomox to stay, it's an already well known name(around ricers) and changing it will be a hassle for programs which use oomox-cli and it'll be confusing(I suspect) towards everyone, since changing the name while it's such a well known project isn't required and will be some work for package maintainers.

@tim241 oomox-cli will still stay because i don't have any plans about renaming oomox gtk theme, only GUI app itself

one of the reasons -- to avoid the confusion between the app and the theme

themix (which seems to be the best/most appropriate name so far) organization name is taken already

what about such organization name: https://github.com/the-mix (but leave the appname themix without dash)

or the-theme-mix will be better?

Hi,
In my first impression, I thought the name of the-mix or the-theme-mix may confusable. What about themix-project (or themix-org, etc.)? I guess themix-*** is less confusing.

thanks for suggestion! that indeed sounds more clear, so i've created https://github.com/themix-project

would you like to join me?

@actionless Sounds great! I hope I can help the project, but maybe I couldn't very much because I don't have much knowledge of Python or Shell. Still if you don't mind, I will join you. :)

you already shown some evident expertise in css and gtk-specific knowledge, it will be useful to have you around, i think it will be easier to coordinate the support/maintaining on the themes

i think that also help to coordinate the support and maintaining of your theme since seems now there is some intersection in our userbase

also you already was very helpful with the naming, mb you could also help coming up with some simple logo, mb just word themix written in different colors or smth like that

did you got any idea for the logo?

I'm considering the logo like a gemstone shining in rainbow, because your project can change the themes to various colors. What do you think? Do not hesitate to say your any opinion. :) Here is a very early version of the logo:

looks nice, what about adding some kind of control, like SpinButton or Scale to represent the customization?

mb try opening this page and it will show some button to join: https://github.com/orgs/themix-project/people

i mean something similar to this may be, but better executed:

untitled

it could be better with a bigger control, in the center, and with some effect between the "separation line"

also, if you don't mind, for now i'll put your first mockup as organization avatar to avoid using default auto-generated github avatar

@nana-4 have you got a chance to finalize the logo?

@nana-4

nana-4 commented May 28, 2018

@actionless I apologize for replying to you so late. Recently I was very busy and in a slump against this 😫 But I finalized the logo anyway!

Well, I reconsidered the design based on your idea and decided to change the logo to the dial-style - since I thought that adding a slider etc. wouldn't work well with smaller icons.

The source and assets are here. [1] Feel free to (re)use and/or modify it. If you don't like it or have requests for the design, please tell me. I'll consider changing the logo. (Regarding the colors, we can easily change it 😃)

[1]: Off-topic note: Sadly, the source SVG is not properly rendered in librsvg 2.42.x. It's properly rendered with Inkscape and web browsers, though. So I'm going to report this bug to the upstream.

Thanks @actionless.

I intended the blue dot (hollow) as a small decoration. I already tried to make it larger, and tried again, but I feel it's already large enough. On smaller icons, if I try to enlarge it even a little, it breaks the balance (or its pixel-perfect). So it's trade-off though.
