From an ssh client on a clean install of the latest wheezy raspbian and rebooting before running the installer, Using the automatic method results in...

Setting up node-which (1.0.5-1) ...
Setting up nodejs-dev (0.6.19dfsg1-2) ...
Setting up npm (1.1.4

Bizarre. I haven't seen this issue at all. Have you had any other issues running programs on your Pi? And this is Occidentalis this time?

No, no other issues - this is a clean wheezy raspian install - and I have left the disk at 2gb (not extending it) - I don't know what Occidentalis is Oh, no I'm using wheezy. I'll re-image with Occidentalis. Doh.

Yea, I haven't had a chance to test with Wheezy yet. It's on the queue though! :)

there is no way it will fit into the 2gb image - justin please add a warning that you need X Mb and perhaps have the install check that there's space available before the install runs

Ya, every other time I'd tried with an extended 8gb card - I was just grasping at straws. I'm not sure why I assumed wheezy was the right build and why I didn't even see anything about Occidentalis.

Closing this as it should work in Occidentalis, and Wheezy on large enough SD cards. The installation process has been vastly revamped. Instructions here: http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2012/10/18/raspberry-pi-webide-update-to-0-2-0/
