Ubuntu has replaced ifupdown with netplan since 17.10.
We should discuss if we want to add configuration templates for netplan on ubuntu or if we want to stick with ifupdown for the time being. Maybe there could be other distributions switching to netplan too.

Since 18.04 is an LTS release and thus going to stay with us for up to 5 years, I'd favour to use the style Ubuntu. Whenever running into issues with Ubuntu, we'd always have to think twice that a regular Ubuntu system would use Netplan but not when using this role.
This is also more likely to survive upgrades going forward since Ubuntu will inherently expect you to use netplan.
I'm against using it. When maintaining Debian and Ubuntu in various versions it's easier from an operational point of view to just have "one" configuration style. Either move everything to NetworkManager, along EL, and use netplan on top or stick with the "old" way.
One could also argue about using systemd-networkd but I'm not sure how feature complete it is at the moment. Works on my Arch machine for some time now though.
Maybe we can wait for another LTS release and check if it's still alive, unlike Mir and Upstart.
IMHO first we have to discuss if we wanna migrate to NetworkManager. Netplan looks like a nice tool, but it makes almost the same as we do with Ansible (or am I wrong?).
