The general idea is to have an "atmosphere" of dust or particles (or even a grid/lattice of short lines) surrounding the guitar that reacts to the motion of either hand. Maybe these elements collide with the hands, or repel away from the hand. It would be important for this reaction to leave a wake/trail of effects behind the motion.
This could provide both an interesting visual effect and a way to improve depth perception. You'd have hundreds of little particles in front of (or behind) your hands, and the more obscured your hand gets, the further it is away from you. In that sense, a "fog" effect might you part of the way there, but I think the particles and physical reactions would be even more helpful.
