It seems like the bison/examples/c++/calc++ directory does not actually contain any example code. There are no cpp, nor any scanner or parser source files.

Hi,
The git repo contains only non-generated files. The content of that directory is built from the documentation. So you need to bootstrap, configure and make the package.
Please see README-hacking.md.
