Summary

We have Code of Conduct and Contribution guideline that applies to this issue and related PRs.

What?

  • Our contributors come from different geographic locations and primary languages
  • We have a community of contributors who are translating The Turing Way materials in different languages and will benefit from the translation of README

Who

  • Any contributor including the Hacktoberfest participants are invited to translate README full or partial file (minimum 5 sentences) on this repository

Currently ongoing/proposed (will be checked off when merged)

How

If you would like to get involved in this translation process, please follow the steps below:

  • Read our README
  • Decide on a language other than English that you are fluent in
  • reply below and ping @BrainonSilicon and @malvikasharan in your comment explaining what you would like to do
  • Translate the file (fully or partially) in your local fork
  • Do not translate the Contributors table, but provide a link that redirects to the main README: see other files for example
    ## [Contributors](https://github.com/alan-turing-institute/the-turing-way/blob/master/README.md#contributors)
  • If the file in your language doesn't exist in the README-translated, please create an issue stating the language (e.g. [Ready to review] README Spanish translation #1338 and README French translation #1346)
    • create a file named README-{language}.md, for example, README-Hindi.md in the README-translated folder
  • If someone is already translating the file (please check the current issues) offer to help review their PR by commenting under their issues or PRs
  • If the file already exists in your language, you can directly edit that file in your local fork
  • Send a pull request to the main repository

If you would like to help translate the book chapters, we use Transifex for that. Please see more details here #970

What happens next? Checkboxes to finish your contribution

  • Reply below with the PR link you created (if you know someone who is fluent in your language of choice and can review your PR, please tag them for review)
  • Check this box to agree to be included in our contributor's table
  • Check this box if you would like to be featured on our Twitter HacktoberFest series
    • In that case, in your comment please share more about you: Who you are? What brought you to HacktoberFest/Turing Way? What makes you nervous or excited about contributing to the Open Source project.

Who can help?

Hi @EstherPlomp, @jessyprovencher, @romeroclaudino - So lovely to see these comments with interest to translate our README to different languages. I have just updated the description of this issue to guide a bit more on how you can get started. Please go ahead and create an issue or PR (or both) so others know that this work in your language is happening. Please ping me, @BrainonSilicon or @paulowoicho for any further help. 👍

Hello, I've created a PR with the Italian readme.md translation. I think it just needs to be read again ( I have to find other volunteers 😄 ) because there may be some typos I didn't catch, but it looks good.

Hi, @BrainonSilicon @malvikasharan. I can help you to translate to Spanish.

Hi @ChristianECG and @giannidsp, @camachoreina and I started the Spanish translation in #1338 on Monday, there is already some parts translated, should we work together to make sure we don't duplicate work?

Hi @malvikasharan and @BrainonSilicon,

I hope both of you are well. I would like to contribute to translating the whole README.md into Chinese! I noticed that the README.md has also been updated recently so I will translate the latest version as well.

I don't think anyone is working on the Chinese translation for now so I will start working on it in the "README-translated" folder after forking.

Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim @timothy22000 ,

I´d love to work with you on the Chinese translation of the "README" file. If you already finish the translation, I can help with the review. 😊

I currently haven´t found any issues or prs related to the Chinese translation. Let me know if I miss anything.

Thanks,
Soledad

Hi @timothy22000! Do you mind adding a link to version you're working on? You can either drop it here or if you can add it to this issue here that would be awesome! It'd be super helpful for tracking which versions and translations are happening.

Happy Hacktoberfest!

Hi @soledadli & @BrainonSilicon - I think it looks like @timothy22000 is busy at the moment so I think you can go ahead and start working on the chinese translation. Ping a link here when you start a branch so he can come along and join in (or help to review!) when he has time.

One other idea I was thinking about is whether translating the welcome page of the book makes more sense than the README file? @malvikasharan - do you have any thoughts about that? I feel like the README file might be a little out of date? I was thinking that the welcome page could link just to a markdown translation in the GitHub repository - so not needing extra pages in the book but rather that we can make the translation more discoverable from the welcome page (https://the-turing-way.netlify.app/welcome).

Just a quick thought, feel free to recommend that the focus stays on the README file for consistence ✨
