I think the problem is related to orientation. I've checked the demo you posted (and one made by me) and if I upload an horizontal picture it works great (also with pictures of instagram with 1:1 ratio).

I don't know why this is affecting in mobile...

anyone has any clues?

The problem also exist in Safari for PC
