I haven't moved on this because I'm not sure it's clearly better than the current state of things.

  • I'm not sure it's more aesthetically pleasing to turn multiple asterisks into a single asterisk with indent
    • Simply replacing with spaces is not necessarily enough, because there is at least one proportional font available (FiraGO)
  • #+ stuff might still be desirable in Reader Mode

I now realize that this is the effect of org-hide-leading-stars or the hidestars STARTUP option. In v1.35.0 you will be able to include #+STARTUP: hidestars in your document to set this.

v1.35.0 will be available for testing soon:
