If I were making a proselint browser extension I would surround bad text in <span class="bad"> and then add CSS .bad{} that makes the text X% transparent. (You could change the background of the text to grey but this works on any colour site.)
As a bonus there are ways to look ahead (let’s say after a page has been loaded for 10–20 seconds) and see if the next link contains a lot of cowardly or awkward text. The link or its containing div can then be visually flagged as not worth following.
