Emmanuel's notes
For the wireless communications, we are using basic serial data radio modules (RF modules). The specific parts are:
- Transmitter: RCT-433-AS http://www.radiotronix.com/datasheets/RCT-433-AS.pdf
- Receiver: RCR-433-MPR http://www.radiotronix.com/datasheets/RCR-XXX-MPRUsersManual.pdf
These are Amplitude-Shift Keying (ASK) or more specifically On-Off Keying (OOK) type devices (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On-off_keying). The transmitter (TX) has a single data input pin, and the receiver (RX) a single data output pin. Bits into the TX input reflect on the RX output after some delay. The max data speed is limited to around 1200 bits/second. There will also tend to be a lot of noise...
You can find a lot of resources (application notes, etc.) on the product series webpage: http://www.radiotronix.com/products/prodsel_db.asp?CatID=1. I also find that datasheets for different but similar parts can give a lot more background.
