Hello,

When emerging only the steam-meta package, no text displayed for me in the steam client. Emerging steamfonts fixed this, but it seems logical that this should be included with the steam-meta package.

Hi, thanks for your report. Unfortunately, fonts are a bit difficult. It depends on your already installed fonts if you need steamfonts or not. On my machine, for example, steam works fine without this package. Steam-client-meta also has a use flag steamfonts that will pull in the package.

On the one hand, it's just a small package that could be installed unconditionally but on the other hand there are quite a few people that prefer to keep their system "clean". Do you think it would already help if we add a elog message that informs the user about this possible dependency?

Makes sense to me; an elog message would be useful.

A bit late, sorry, but I just added it. Thanks!

I guess the correct solution would be to depend either on the possibly preinstalled font which works (which ever that is) or steamfonts.

(which ever that is)

This is the problem as I don't know how to properly determine them.

Perhaps anything under virtual/ttf-fonts would work?

well i guess, someone would have to dissect the installed fonts to find out which is working.

On my system, I wasn't yet able to reproduce the problem. Steamfonts only installs the Arial fonts. I removed this and the corefonts package but the steam client still worked normal. If I have some spare time again, I will check if there are other packages on my system which install a suitable font.

Steam seems to able to utilize any TrueType and OpenType font on my machine -- I used to have a very minimalist approach to fonts where I used packages.provided to mask all font packs and only installed a single OpenType font that I personally bought, and Steam still works.
