What problem does this feature solve?

What does the proposed API look like?

It should be the logic of the rendering layer

Same issue very noticeable in an official example. You could experiment with layoutIterations value, it may help a little.
What I think is even more important is a new feature like moveOverlap, since many nodes are displayed on top of each other.
