-- is turned into by the Markdown parser it seems. While typographically useful, we mostly want double hyphens to remain verbatim because they appear in startup option documentation a lot.

So either disable this feature, or wrap everything in inline code tags (but not sure if we want to do that everywhere visually speaking).

ok..this is nasty...kramdown does NOT support to disable it...so I made a global replace (eek)

Sounds like you can disable it? gettalong/kramdown#472

  • New option 'typographic_symbols' to control how typographic symbols are output by the HTML and
    LaTeX converters (fixes [Add 3.8 docs folder #472] requested by Kyle Barbour)

good catch...it seems this is commonly called "SmartyPants" ... was apparently googling wrong
