In order to minimize memory space occupied by the OLSR routing table, provide some mechanism that a local advertised service/host really exists before advertising it to the network. Perhaps a simple ping to the service/host might be appropriate.

I've clicked on many a host to only get back an unreachable message.

Eliminating unreachable local unreachable hosts will help to preserve memory space in all downstream nodes as well as shorten nodes broadcasts.

what if pings are blocked at the device? ie. a PC/Mac firewall
how would you handle that condition?

Obviously, that's a good question, one I don't have a good answer for. However, if one does a ping on the local network, even though it is not returned from a device, won't arp find the device and not return an unreachable error?

I realize that this could become very complex real fast. And, that code space in a node has to be minimized. But, I wanted to get the concept of eliminating unreachable devices on the table for discussion.

enhancement made to remove a service from olsr if the service is no longer live on the network. Closing this request accordingly.
