Threadful

Common "Thread" behavior for Browsers (using Web Workers) or Node (using Child Process).

Description

This package attempts to provide thread-like behavior to JavaScript using Web Workers for the Browser or Child Process for Node.js. It has several advantages over some of its peers:

  • Create a Thread or a ThreadPool of multiple threads.
  • Install a function to the Thread/ThreadPool without having to predefine it in the slave/child loading file.
  • Once installed installed functions can be repeatedly called without the performance penalty of installing the function each time.
  • In a ThreadPool with more than one thread Install is done on all Threads, and execution is done on a single thread, (whichever is the next thread in the pool.)
  • Uses a common module file for both the master and slave/child processes, thus taking advantage of browser caching.
  • Provides the ability to execute certain functions (called "Selfies") back on the master from a slave/child (one way). For example, Web Workers do not have a console option, but with a console.log selfie, the slave/child can do console.log back on the server.
  • "Threadify" a function so all calls of that function are automatically run on the Thread/ThreadPool.
  • Single Execution of a function without the need to install for one-off behavior. (Incurrs the perfromance penalty of having to install though).

Performance

Because JavaScript lacks real thread support it uses thread like abstractions such as Web Workers or Child Process. These abstractions are actually spawning an entirely separate VM for execution. This can be expensive from both a time and a memory point of view. For this reason, Threadful (and any thread solution) should be used with thought and caution.

Threadful attempts to shave millis off the performance costs whereever possible. By having an Install mechanism, Threadful allows the developer to minimize the performance penalty assocated with dynamically executing functions in a Thread.

On average we have seen the following performance... Your own results may vary.

Require Threadful (on Node) ................... 4 ms.

Execute an Installed Function ................. 3 ms.
Execute a not previously installed Function ... 78 ms.
Threadify a Function .......................... 74 ms.

Given these numbers and other test, one should carefully weigh whether executing in a thread is necessary or not. Thread code that takes a long time to perform, generally does better in a thread than that which is quickly but often performed. Large calculations perform much better than small things, quality over quantity.

In our example code, we wrote a very simplistic prime number test and then let it run for 10 seconds. We compared running in the main thread to distributing the work across a large number of threads. Here are the results we saw...

Our results indicate that when working with small primes, using threads was detrimental because the small primes are so quickly calculated individually. However, when we switched to large primes we saw immediate benefit from using thread because large prime calculations take more time individually. Our results also illustrate the diminishing return point of exceeding the number of "cores" available.

You can get Threadful from npm using the command

Please Note: Installing Threadful in a browser creates the global object Threadful.

Callbacks

Threadful uses callbacks to notify when things are complete. All callbacks have the form callback(error,result). If error is not null, some error occured during execution. Otherwise a valid result will be populated, if any was sent back.

Threadful

Threadful.ThreadPool

You can create a pool of threads just as easily using the new Threadful.ThreadPool(options) constructor. You just need to specify the number threads you wish in the pool. Threads can added or removed after the pool has been created with increaseThreadPoolSizeBy() and decreaseThreadPoolSizeBy().

Threadful.ThreadPool returns a new ThreadPool object. See below for details.

Threadful.Thread

You can create a single Thread using the new Threadful.Thread() constructor.. Note that creating a single thread is really jsut a wrapper for creating a thread pool with 1 thread and a timeout of 500ms.

Threadful.Thread returns a new ThreadPool object. See below for details.

Threadful.Threadify

Threadify is a process that when given a function will create a Thread, install the function into the thread, and return a new function. When the new function is executed the actual execution is passed off to the original function in the thread. It essentially wraps a function in a Thread execution. It is provided purely for quick and easy access but does have some limitations...

  • Threadify functions are self contained Threads and not shared with other functions.
  • Threadify functions cannot (at this time) be unwound from their Thread.
  • Threadify functions do not expose thier underlying Thread (yet).
  • Threadify functions cannot be closed (yet).

Instead of using Threadful.Threadify consider creating a new Thread and using the Thread.threadify() method there.

Threadful.Threadify returns a new function, which serves as the means to execute the original function but on the thread created. The function will take any number of parameters, but the last parameter should be a callback function to be notified of the result of execution.

Threadful.Execute

Execute is a one time thread execution for a passed in function. It create a single use Thread, installs the function into it, and then executes the function immediately. Once execution is complete the Thread is closed and no longer usable. Threadful.Execute has some very consquental limitations, so use with care.

  • It is single use.
  • Each time you use Execute you pay the performance of creating a new thread, installing the function, and executing the function all at once.
  • The created thread cannot be reused.

Instead of using Threadful.Execute consider creating a new Thread, installing the function to the Thread, and using Thread.execute() to run it.

Execute returns nothing.

// Define some function

Threadful.CloseAll

Closes all previously created ThreadPool objects including those created by Threadful.Threadify and Threadful.Execute. Once a ThreadPool is closed it cannot be reused.

ThreadPool

Once a Thread or ThreadPool is instantiated with new Thread() or new ThreadPool(), you can perform the following operations on either.

ThreadPool install(name,f,callback)

Installs the function f with the given name onto all Threads in the ThreadPool. The callback is fired when all threads report back that the function was installed.

// Install the function to all threads as "someFunction"
threadpool.install("someFunction",f,callback);

// Execute "someFunction"
threadpool.execute("someFunction",1,2,3,callback);

Please note that as stated above installation of a function is done for each thread in the ThreadPool. Thus if the ThreadPool has 4 threads, each will install the function to it. This allow execute to use a non-busy thread (or the last unused thread) when run.

ThreadPool uninstall(name,callback)

Uninstalls the named function name from all threads in the ThreadPool. The callback is fired when all threads report back that the function was uninstalled.

// Uninstall the function "someFunction" on all threads 
threadpool.uninstall("someFunction",callback);

ThreadPool installed(name)

Returns true if the named function is installed or not. This is a syncronous call that returns immediately.

threadpool.installed("someFunction"); // true if intstalled

ThreadPool execute(name,arg,arg,arg,etc,callback)

Executes the named function name on the first available thread in the ThreadPool. execute can take zero or more arguments that are passed to the thread for execution. THe last argument should be the callback to fire with the result.

It should be noted that only basic types can be used as arguments to execute. The following types are allowed: undefined, null, number, string, date, regexp, object (so long as all members also conform to these types), array (so long as all members also conform to these types). Notably XML, Elements, Window, Global, and Document cannot be used as arguments.

// Execute "someFunction"

Execute will run callback when the execute function has finished executing on the thread.

ThreadPool threadify(f)

Given some function f return a new function that when run executes the given function f on a thread. Threadify is a wrapper for installing and executing the function f without supplying a name and returning a function that handles all the executiong function. Consider...

"someFunction" can be executed as shown above without to much trouble. Threadify on the other hand, cleans up some of these implementation details. Consider this...

// Create a Threadpool
var threadpool = new Threadful.ThreadPool({
  threads: 4,
  timeout: 500

// Threadify f
var g = threadpool.threadify(f);

// Execute f on a thread.
g(1,2,3,callback)

In the second example, g has wrapped all the execution details of executing f on a threadpool thread.

Threadify functions can take any number of arguments, so long as the last argument is the callback function to run when execution is complete.

ThreadPool distribute(name,iterable,resolver,callback)

Distribute spreads the execution of the installed function name for some iterable across all threads in the pool. Results from all executions are than resolved into a final result, which is passed to the callback when complete. An interable can be an array of values, or it can be a function that when executed returns the next value in the iteration or undefined when the iteration is complete.

If the interable is a function, it gets one parameters, the index count of this iteration which starts from 0 and increments with each execution of iterable.

distribute, map, filter, some, and every will use all the non-busy threads in a ThreadPool as often as necessary to complete its task.

The resolver function, if any, is executed once for each result back on the main thread.  The resolver function gets the following arguments resolver(error,result,originalValue,index).  `error` is any error returned from executing the function `name` on the thread.  `result` is the result returned if no error occured.  `originalValue` is the original value passed to the thread for execution. `index` is the index used with the iterable.  The resolver does not need to return a value.

The callback of distribute will return an error if any error occured during execution, or an array of results, one for each iteration run.

#### `ThreadPool map(name,iterable,resolver,callback)`

Map is used to transform one `iterable` into a new array.  It is functionally equivelent to `Array.map` except for it usage of Threads for the execution of the closure function.

If the `interable` is a function, it gets one parameters, the index count of this iteration which starts from 0 and increments with each execution of iterable.

`distribute`, `map`, `filter`, `some`, and `every` will use all the non-busy threads in a ThreadPool as often as necessary to complete its task.

The resolver function, if any, is executed once for each result back on the main thread. ThreadPool filter(name,iterable,callback)

Filter reduces an iterable into a new smaller array. For each execution of name if the value returned is true, the value is placed into the results array returned to callback. Filter is functionally equivelent to Array.filter except for it usage of Threads for the execution of the closure function.

If the interable is a function, it gets one parameters, the index count of this iteration which starts from 0 and increments with each execution of iterable.

#### `ThreadPool some(name,iterable,callback)`

Some iterates an `iterable` until the executing of the function `name` returns true, at which point the value of `true` is passed to the `callback. If the `iterable` ends without a value of `true` being called, the value of `false` is sent to the `callback`.  Some is functionally equivelent to `Array.some` except for it usage of Threads for the execution of the closure function.

If the `interable` is a function, it gets one parameters, the index count of this iteration which starts from 0 and increments with each execution of iterable.

#### `ThreadPool list()`

Returns a list of all installed function names.  This returns immediately.

#### `ThreadPool status(callback)`

Returns an object containing status details for the ThreadPool and each Thread in the pool. The status object has the following structure:

status.threads will have one thread status object for each thread, keyed by thread index number. A thread status object looks like this:

ThreadPool close(callback)

Closes the ThreadPool and fires the callback when complete.

Please note that once a ThreadPool is closed, it cannot be used further.

ThreadPool getThreadPoolSize()

Returns the number of threads in the thread pool.

ThreadPool outstanding()

Returns the number of threads currently busy.

ThreadPool utilization()

Returns a number between 1 and 0 representing the percentage of the ThreadPool that is busy.

Using Console in Threads

One of the features that Threadful does for you is that it will allow you to use console.log, console.info, console.warn, and console.error in each Thread created by it. Any call to one of these console commands, will bundle the console message up and send it back to the main thread for writing.

In the above example, even though function f is actually run in a thread, the console.log commands are executed back on the main thread.

Troubleshooting

Firefox: SecurityError: The operation is insecure.

You are most likely connecting to a local (file:) page and getting this error. Firefox, by default, enforces a struct uri policy and Threadful seems to violate that when using local files. You can override this setting in about:config by finding the security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy property and seting it to false. Make sure to set this back after you are done.
