From Thunderbird/Add-ons Guide 57 - MozillaWiki#Removed and changed in mozilla59:

  1. Alternatively, add-ons may embed a WebExtension to display inline options[6][7]. This should be working now that bug 1418914 has been fixed.

This is only supported in Thunderbird 59 and newer however.

Once there will be an example add-on, I will take a look. For now the "old" methods work and I also want to keep Tb 52.x support.
