The aim of the Bisq Transifex Project is to produce technically accurate and up-to-date translations of the Bisq desktop application and relevant Bisq sites from English into other languages.
All translations are done on Transifex, and we currently have three projects there:
- Bisq desktop, the most crucial part of the project which involves translation of the Bisq software.
- Bisq website, which involves translating the Bisq landing page and other sites that provide important information about the app to users.
- Bisq subtitles, which provides subtitles for some Bisq videos on YouTube.
The Bisq software is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), French, Russian, German, Chinese (Mandarin and traditional), Japanese, Persian, Thai and Vietnamese. These are core languages the work for which is compensated. We focus on quality, consistency and availability of important information about Bisq, so we prioritize these core languages.
In order to add a language to the core group, please follow these guidelines to submit a proposal to the Bisq DAO.
To make it easier for users to understand the Bisq software, certain Bisq pages (such as the landing page, vision and others) are available in core languages. The decision to translate certain pages is based on their importance to users, and is mostly focused on the software itself.
There are also some Bisq videos with subtitles in several core languages. Only translations into core languages are compensated. To ensure that we stay within budget constraints, we keep track of views and prioritize videos that have a lot of views.
The Transifex team consists of translators, reviewers, coordinators and admins.
Any contributor who has good knowledge of a foreign language is welcome to become a translator by creating an account on Transifex and requesting permission to translate. Please note that although we welcome your contributions in a language of your choice, currently only translations for core languages are being compensated.
Those translators who have been regular contributors and have shown solid knowledge of their language are given access to review. You can find more guidelines on translations and reviews here.
In Transifex, each language team has a coordinator who is available to guide new translators, help resolve Transifex issues, and explore opportunities to expand Bisq in their region. This is not an official role, and it mostly depends on the coordinators' initiative and involvement. The workload can vary depending on the engagement, and so does the amount of compensation. A few coordinators who have contributed on a regular basis are given access on Transifex to take over some of the admin tasks to ensure smooth workflow.
There are two admins in the project. An admin acting in the primary role ensures that all essential tasks have been completed. Any coordinator who has contributed on a regular basis can become an admin once the position is open.
Admin responsibilities include the following tasks (some of which may be delegated to coordinators and other translators):
- Create reports for each Bisd DAO cycle.
- Host monthly translator calls.
- Keep track of monthly expenses for the project (based on compensation requests).
- Accept new translators, assign translators as reviewers and coordinators on Transifex.
- Update translations for all core languages in the new client release.
- Inform translators of the planned update, ideally a week before it happens.
- Provide clear documentation to help translators do their work effectively and keep it updated.
- Review statistics (YouTube, etc) to evaluate user activity in that language.
- Moderate three major communication channels: #transifex Keybase channel, announcements in Transifex, Bisq forum.
- Keep general information in Setting on Transifex updated (for all Transifex projects).
- Keep track of issues on Transifex and in the query and ensure that they have been addressed.
- Establish and coordinate active language teams, ensure that the team structure is updated on Transifex.
- Oversee the creation of a comprehensive glossary that is consistent across all core languages, and a style guide that can set standards for all translations.
- Daily: #transifex channel on Keybase.
- Major announcements: Keybase, Transifex team discussions, Bisq forum.
- The Transifex team meets online once a month via monthly translator calls.
