In 2018, Yu Nasu proposed a neural network based evaluation function for computer shogi in his paper "Efficiently Updatable Neural-Network-based Evaluation Function for computer Shogi".
This appraoch proved to be very powerful, and has been backported to the chess program Stockfish.
