Luckily I browsed through latest commits and saw that commit message, wasn't sure why it wasn't working.... is there a way to make sure the new version keeps support for the old variable, or maybe provide a note in the documentation?

It's actually fairly extensively documented in the No Query Fallbacks section of the official 2.x documentation.

Sorry, I hadn't thought to check the project wiki. I was following this tutorial http://breakpoint-sass.com/#no_query_fallback which was saying use $breakpoint-no-query-wrappers - just thought I would let you know.

Yup, that site needs to be updated, however, that's not the official documentation. The Wiki is the official documentation.
