Maps are a precious resource and location is a powerful way to visualise and understand data. However getting data on a map and distributing it in a decentralised manner has been a challenge. We want to make GIS data available to everyone in a decentralised and permissioned (if needed) manner using blockchains. In addition, we want to use the blockchain as a proof of record for the existence of the data.

Where would this be useful? There are a lot of scenarios where maintaining geo information on a blockchain becomes useful ranging from ready access to maps in crisis situations to providing an undeniable proof of record of maps of data that is changing over time like climate patterns or forest coverage. Another scenario we plan to support is, to provide support for doing transactions of data sharing like mineral surveys between private parties. Have a look here for a more detailed exploration of some of the scenarios we could support.
