The short answer is that it reduces noise and allows the radar to image reflectors that would otherwise be 'buried-in the noise' (i.e. the noise would be higher amplitude that the amplitude of the reflectors, rendering them undetectable).
I think we should add a demonstration of the effect of stacking to various degrees in the glaciology JupyterBook we've been working on.
ImpDar includes a quick demo of stacking here. It could be good to build on this to include in the glaciology JupyterBook.
Could be a nice first page for someone to contribute to that project if anyone is interested.
