Can searchbox retain previously entered search terms?

Description

this was a request from Kee-Young Moon at Avalon User Roundtable. She mentioned that after entering a search term, it disappears from the search box, so the user has to re-enter the search term if they want to add on to it in order to refine their search.

There is a breadcrumb with search term in Avalon, but this is particularly bad in the MCO interface as there is no breadcrumb display and the search term doesn't remain in the search box, so the user actually doesn't know what they searched for.

See Aviary or IUCAT for example of how this could work. Google also retains the search term unless cleared by user.
