In March 2022, we are planning on removing support for Visual Studio 2017 from the AWS Toolkit. Mainstream support for Visual Studio 2017 will end in April 2022. The highest supported version of .NET Core in Visual Studio 2017 (.NET Core 2.1) reached end of support in August 2021.

If you are still using the Toolkit within Visual Studio 2017, you are encouraged to install a newer major version of Visual Studio (2019 or 2022) and the corresponding AWS Toolkit extension, available on the marketplace:

If you continue to use Visual Studio 2017, you will be able to install the final version of the AWS Toolkit that supports it, however that extension will not receive updates.

Here is how support for Visual Studio 2017 was phased out:

  • in early-to-mid March, an upcoming release of the Toolkit (update: v1.27.0.0 - changelog) will show a dismissible info bar in Visual Studio 2017 indicating that the Toolkit will stop receiving updates. This will be one of the last versions of AWS Toolkit that can install on Visual Studio 2017.
  • in mid-April, a subsequent release (update: this is v1.28.0.0) of the same extension will no longer work with Visual Studio 2017. Future versions of the extension that used to support both Visual Studio 2017 and Visual Studio 2019, will exclusively support Visual Studio 2019.
  • The final version of the Toolkit for Visual Studio 2017 can be found in the Releases section of the repo: https://github.com/aws/aws-toolkit-visual-studio/releases/tag/v1.27.0.0
