This module port is in early testing phases (please help test and debug!). On a fresh install the most basic level user import is working, but it fails on a site with CiviCRM installed in the same way as the webform_registration issue here:

backdrop-contrib/webform_registration#3

I'm guessing the solution will be applicable to both projects.

This issue will be solved upstream in the CiviCRM Backdrop module, so I'm closing this issue.
