So when a hold is created, the buyer will initially see "marketplace-domain.com" on their cc statement if they look at pending transactions, but when the hold is captured with appears_on_statement_as attribute, then the hold drops off, and the actual debit will have the appropriate data, correct?
Could this be confusing, and are we absolutely sure that we cannot set the hold's soft descriptor as well?
The reason that Balanced isn't exposing this so you can control it was better explained on the balanced-ruby issue:
Balanced will attempt to set what appears on the statement to the domain name of your site when creating a hold, however this is poorly supported by Amex and debit cards so it's not something that we expose via the API.
Your understanding of how it currently works is correct.
