Can beta 7 be installed using this patcher? #45
Comments
How... how did you even get that far!? How did you even get the update to download? To answer the question, no, right now this patcher can't install beta 7. If I was able to even get the update to download, I might be able to fix that, however. If all else fails, I'll try to download the update on a supported Mac, but right now I only have one Mac that supports Big Sur, and it's broken. |
Heyyyy I finally installed the update successfully on my MacBook Pro mid 2012 13 inch Also I have 2-3 other MacBooks that support BigSur but those are my Office laptop and this one's my personal so I quickly did a work around and had my Bootable BigSur thumb drive. |
Let me know if I can help you in any way and also if you do come around with a AirDrop service to work in the future. Please update. Thanks. |
@sahaib that's |
realised that a lil late I actually read in Feedback assistant that I need to install beta 6 and then update to beta 7 it's a proper image download so I believe we gotta have to wait till another major or the final update. 😅 Sorry for the trouble if it was caused in any ways. |
@sahaib Your good just wanted to point it out. |
@sahaib The set-vars problem is issue #24. I'll have an updated patcher soon that fixes that problem. The original plan was for this weekend, but it might get delayed a little. After that, I'm going to make several improvements to patch-kexts.sh, including (but not limited to) improved processing of command line options and automatic detection of Mac model (so that command line options will be optional for all Macs, not just 2012/2013). Once those changes are done, it will be much easier to make it install different WiFi patches for different Mac models. I have some ideas for how to do the WiFi patch differently, particularly for 2012/2013 Macs, and I'm hoping that will make it possible to fix AirDrop without adding worse bugs at the same time. |
@barrykn Got it! Yes I went through issue #24 I'm on beta 6 which is, as I previous said working very smooth better than my stable Catalina. |
@barrykn I was able to download macOS Big Sur with a supported mac, so I have the downloaded |
The easiest way is probably to use createinstallmedia to create a bootable USB, then check the contents of System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist on that USB. (Oh, also, before you use createinstallmedia to make the USB, you should erase the USB stick with a GUID Partition Table using Disk Utility. It'll be easier to patch it with v0.2.0 of the micropatcher when that comes out, probably today, if you do that first. The README doesn't mention it yet because I'm still in the process of updating it.) The System folder on the USB will be hidden, so it may be easiest to check it with this Terminal command:
By the way, I'm going to guess that it's build 20A5364e, which is beta 6. |
awesome thanks! Yep you are right it is beta 6. weird. even though I have beta 7 installed on this device, it downloaded beta 6..... |
Yes, if it decides for whatever reason that it has to do a full download instead of a delta download, it will download beta 6. |
Hopefully we can get beta 8 now..... now that it's out. |
@barrykn doesn't look like it... |
@barrykn maybe with public beta 8 we will see it. |
@donavanbecker yesterday I posted on the MacRumors Forum thread that I wasn't expecting a full installer until beta 9. My prediction seems to be correct for beta 8 at least. |
@barrykn and I am guessing there is no way to get the beta 8 delta download to update right? |
@barrykn Now I'm discovering issues like, when I try to install apps like Virtualbox or Bluestacks they need need permission from System Preferences in Security & Privacy where you need to unlock and hit the Allow button. But in my case I don't see any Allow button whatsoever I tried installing in many ways and multiple times. I hope future patches resolves this as well. |
There is apparently a way, but it's currently not all that easy. (Part of the problem is the way that patch-kexts.sh/unpatch-kexts.sh are designed, and how that interacts with Apple's design for the delta updaters. Basically, if you ever run patch-kexts.sh, no delta updater will ever succeed without running a full installer again, and then absolutely avoiding patch-kexts.sh before applying any delta updates. I think I should be able to do something about that in v0.2.1 but I'm not certain yet.) |
VirtualBox, at least, is going to need changes to work with Big Sur. That has nothing to do with the patcher. I'm sure we'll hear more about VirtualBox updates for Big Sur after Big Sur is released, but not before. I'm not as familiar with Bluestacks, but in all likelihood it will also need updates for Big Sur compatibility, for similar reasons. |
Got it even I totally forgot that I'm still on a Beta version. So I'll be just waiting for BigSur stable release and your available patch post that. As of now I have two SSDs on my MBP 2012 one of which has Catalina so I'm good if some important app doesn't works. Thanks a lot.

Slightly offtopic, but anyone using VirtualBox is going to want to migrate to VMware Fusion Player. VMware has announced it will be free for personal use (just like Vbox), which aligns with their product family for Windows. There is currently a Fusion 12 tech preview that works on BS betas. It is extremely light as it uses the native macOS HypervisorKit. My only Windows 10 machine is a VM and it runs better than it ever did in VirtualBox. |
Anyone using VirtualBox on Mac will want to consider migrating to Fusion Player, certainly -- but there are reasons for sticking with VirtualBox in some cases. For instance, if you're using VirtualBox without the Extension Pack and you don't need support from Oracle, then it's not just free for personal use, it's free period. |
I managed to get the URLs to get the delta from beta 6 to beta 8. Software update downloads two zip files, one small 1.9 Mb and one large 3.6Gb. Once unpacked they look a lot like files from inside an installer but there is no installer. Maybe somebody knows how to handle them? |
@sahaib I haven't had a chance to try the latest VirtualBox test build yet, but my understanding is that it should now have working Big Sur support. Just figured I'd let you know. Edit: If I remember correctly, uninstallation of the test build doesn't work properly because of a bug in Big Sur beta 9, but it's supposed to install and run properly now. |
@barrykn Thanks for uploading. I'm still awaiting the stable release to test out things. I'm still on beta 6 and will stay until the release. Will definitely update you bit by bit once we're there . |
@sahaib VirtualBox 6.1.16 came out several days ago, for what it's worth. (I haven't yet tried it on Big Sur. I will at some point but it could be a week or more before I get a chance.) |
@barrykn Thanks! I’ll get my hands in it today. |
I'm getting this screen after following all the steps but instead of getting the setup screen this is what I get,

I'm trying this on my MacBook Pro Mid 2012 13 inch
