whitespace-mode doesn't show whitespace while in C++-mode

With a stock install of Prelude and nothing else affecting my emacs configuration whitespace-mode does not show whitespace while in C++-mode. I can toggle whitespace-mode on and off but no whitespace is shown.

Without Preludem or with Prelude but in other major modes, whitespace-mode does work for me as expected.

This is with homebrew's Emacs 24.4.1 on OS X.
