Yeah, I get it. It's a pretty glaring omission! It's totally doable, though. I had a quick-n-hacky version for a while years ago and intended to turn it into a proper recs command but never got round to it. The main reason was that often leaning on other tools to turn an .xls or .xlsx into a set of .csv and then processing those with recs was Good Enough for me. One example of such a tool, dating from a decade ago: explode_csv.
I haven't really used recs very much in going on 6 years as I'm not doing work where I tend to reach for it. It's still got a special place in my heart, but I'm not sure I have the bandwidth these days to work on it when I'm not using it daily.
Pretty self explanatory, right now I open files in excel, then save as CSV, but for big xls, it's....painful.
