Noticed when working on migrating away from glibc's libcrypt downstream in Gentoo. Originally filed this bug here.

I will attempt to reproduce and fix this bug in the near future. I may not be able to reproduce the problem on the SPARC systems available to me, in which case I will need assistance from someone with access to a system where it fails.
