Things like Night\Day presets would be welcomed a lot. Should be relatively
easy to implement...

I may decide to add rudimentary style sheet support--you could set the 
background colors there.  I don't really 
want to clutter the interface with a ColorWell-type object, though.

Style sheet support will not work (I just tried it.)  I'll consider some kind 
of "theme" mechanism, though... thanks.
