Bisq Dictionary #392
Comments
Sounds expensive, and would need maintenance. https://bisq.wiki already fulfills the role. Years of effort have gone into explaining the technicalities of Bisq, like Arbitrator, Mediator, the DAO, trading and dispute processes. There's a myriad of educational information, youtube presentations etc on how Bisq works and how to use it. If anything, missing keywords like API, CLI can be added to the bisq wiki. |
Thanks @UX-P for the interesting proposal! I agree that for not-expert users Bisq is a bit challenging and the available information at webpage/wiki/docs/youtube is quite scattered and a lot to read. To get that better organized would be good IMO and your suggestion could be a tool for non-expert traders to get an easier entry to Bisq. |
I agree with @jmacxx that it would overlap with the wiki, and detract from the extensive and long-running job it's been done on it. |
hi @w0000000t @jmacxx thanks for the feedback concerning the wiki, I will hopefully be able to explain how they differentiate. We all appreciate the work that has been put into the wiki and it acts as an effective guide providing information and instructions on how Bisq works. The support channel demonstrates that it is referred to often when an issue has occurred and so does not have the same functionality as the dictionary but could certainly be used in conjunction and I agree that it is essential for the wiki to continue in being maintained. Bisq dictionary would be specifically aimed at helping potential traders and current traders with technical terms used across the BTC industry. The descriptions are brief, concise and to the point, easy for an onboarder to understand the most complex words, within a paragraph. I have been informed from a technical standpoint that this is quite a low maintenance site but if you would like to advise on any technicalities I am missing please do so. Furthermore, this proposal goes beyond technical definitions in the hope to also attract the attention of a wider community. There’s a lot of information and misinformation being spread currently online, and it would be a great opportunity to continue in contributing something informative to the community and those looking to join during this time. |
@jmacxx I have just seen your drop-down image (hidden on my screen) and realised that there must have been a misunderstanding. The product is primarily a general dictionary by Bisq and not literally a ‘Bisq Dictionary’, I can see where the tentative title may cause confusion. If discovered through the search bar, it would essentially be aimed at those who do not particular know or use Bisq, and are conducting more of a general search. Does this help to clarify the product a bit more? |
I am not sure how valuable that would be. People searching for 'What is a DAO’ are likely not potential users of Bisq. Also there will be lots of competition for more generic search terms like this that a static Dictionary site would not be able to effectively compete for. Why keep it simple and add a dictionary / glossary to the Bisq wiki? Or maybe a word of the day pop-up etc for new users of the Bisq 2 app? |
Hi @pazza83, thanks! Those are good suggestions, my concern would be that they may not provide the experience described.
Amongst those users looking up DAO, there could be some interested in trading on Bisq, but that is not something I have researched into so I can not say at the moment.
I agree that certain words would be more competitive than others however, there will be a variety of terms available along with a heavy reliance on the niche words and abbreviations (e.g. DEX) to help in ranking higher in search results. In terms of instant measurable value, the tool will be available on Bisq where onboarding traders would open the dictionary if necessary, search a technical word, and read a quick overview of it’s description. The idea is to provide a pleasant, non-disruptive learning experience as they navigate through their trading journey. If the user requires a more intricate breakdown, the definitions will be linked to the corresponding wiki help pages. In respect to adding a dictionary to the wiki, I don’t think it will provide the user with the same experience. Minimal navigation and a simplistic overview, with the choice of further exploration. I plan to ensure this is kept as a very low maintenance product. As stated above, I can have this developed and delivered as a static site or edge function. I will however, need some assistance from developers and other contributors with writing and proofreading to ensure the descriptions are accurate and up to Bisq standards. |
Closing due to lack of activity and no clear consensus. |
Hi everyone,
From past research it has been reported that the Bisq website and specific points are a little too technical for the onboarding trader.
I agree certain terms employed on the app are not very user friendly and some text require simplifying, however, there are terms used throughout the cryptocurrency industry the new trader would benefit from learning. I had previously suggested a ‘Word of the Day’ to be posted on Bisq’s social media to help in gaining a familiarity with industry words or phrases, however, in noticing the scarcity of general onboarding tools, a dictionary may be a more impactful contribution.
Product
The Bisq Dictionary (the name is not official) is aimed at the beginner and mid trader and provides definitions to terms and phrases used by Bisq, other trading platforms and the general cryptocurrency industry.

Generally new to the industry
Bitcoin
Peer-to-Peer

Beginner Trader

How it works (these screenshots are a prototype, please treat all wording as placeholders and not official copy) :
Marketing
Here are a few ways this could be used as a marketing tool:
Impact Expectations
Responsibilities (including post-delivery)
Compensation of $40/hr
Research on latest news and updates to keep up to date with trending terms
Engaging with the community to monitor pain points in regards to wording
Engage with contributors for proofreading
Researching and using keywords for effective google SEO
Updating the site with new words and phrases
Researching and writing word definitions
General website maintenance
Provide summary of work with screenshots
Deliverable
Compensation: $3510
This is a long term deliverable and its utility is vast with an impact transferred throughout the Bisq user market.
The website will already provide 20 words and definitions at the time of delivery but will continue to be updated.
I would like to keep the project small in terms of development leaving room for iteration. A static site or an edge function will be provided and completed within 3 weeks.
Ideally the website would be under the Bisq subdomain e.g. dictionary.bisq.network
Please let me know what you think and if you have any questions! Thanks
