Hi there, I have seen others with this error who have apparently fixed it but I have logged off and on again and now upgraded to the latest version of multibit and I am still getting the same error.

I did put the wallet on an external drive and I can see the transactions when I open the wallet but it has a ? next to the status of each transaction and just hangs on Syncronishing (at the top) and Connecting (at the bottom). Please help! thanks in advance.

The user data directory is "null\MultiBit".
The installation directory is "C:\Program Files\MultiBit-0.5.18".
Unable to load blockchain "null\MultiBit\multibit.spvchain". The error was "java.io.IOException The system cannot find the path specified".
org.multibit.file.WalletSaveException Cannot save wallet 'C:\Program Files\MultiBit-0.5.18\null\MultiBit\multibit.wallet
Created wallet "C:\Program Files\MultiBit-0.5.18\null\MultiBit\multibit.wallet".
Could not load the wallet file "C:\Program Files\MultiBit-0.5.18\null\MultiBit\multibit.wallet".
The error message was "Cannot backup wallet 'C:\Program Files\MultiBit-

Hi Emillees,

I think MultiBit isn't handling the remote drive correctly and hence cannot load (nor save) your wallet.

Probably the easiest workaround is for you:

  1. shut down MultiBit
  2. move the wallet file (and the "wallet-file"-data directory that stores the backups) onto a local drive.
  3. start MultiBit back up again. It will complain that it cannot open the moved wallet (as it is not there). Ignore that and then simply open the wallet using the menu option 'File |Open'. It should then automatically sync with the Bitcoin network
