Not having to rely on some external URL such as placehold.it would be easier to configure with regards to frameworks like Meteor that provide support for setting the same-origin policy.

I like placehold.it because it uses the standard image source tags rather than a data target. That way it is easier for someone who downloads the template to just plop in their image where the images are supposed to be.
Is there a particular reason placehold.it is used instead of the built-in holder.js with bootstrap 3?
