The timer logic may not be sufficient for maintaining sync with August's Eventual consistency for the lock states.

Without a proper local api and the internet service providers being the main limiting factor and the August API speed being another limiting factor I don't think there is a decent alternative to the timer. One could tune the short and long polling durations to better work for their Internet speed. I have found a 15 and 5 second interval works fine and means at most it will be 5 seconds before the homekit status updates.
