Confusingly enough, I seem to have a working copy on my GHC 7.4.1, perhaps installed with cabal-dev…

Thanks for reporting. I've just uploaded smallcheck v0.6.2 which fixes the problem.

(The reason why you have it installed is that it's compiled against an older version of test-framework that doesn't require that instance.)
