When trying to commit to modern GitLab:

Error: Hook /var/git/git-data/repositories/root/first.git/hooks/pre-receive failed
Error:  with output:
Error: The gitlab-shell hooks have been migrated to Gitaly, see
Error:  https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitaly/issues/1226
Error: This error was generated by a custom hook script on the Subversion server.
Error: Please contact your server administrator for help with resolving this issue.```
