This is something that I'll need some help on. I'm not much of a graphics designer, and the current icon was contributed to the project. Someone from the community would need to be interested and contribute the change. If that happens, I'd be happy to review and accept the change.

I do not think it is necessary. The requirement is that the app builds against the Android 8.0 SDK. I believe that it currently does (otherwise, I would not be able to upload updates). The last update on Play was about a month ago.

It's easy. Just keep the central image and add the background.
